What is CBT?
CBT is a highly effective, evidence-based therapy which is recommended for a wide range of common mental health problems. It works by understanding how the way we think and behave, affects how we feel and what happens in our world.
For example, when we worry (thinking) we tend to feel very anxious (feeling) and this can lead to us avoiding facing stressful problems (behaviour), in turn this can mean the problems don’t go away (our world), or they get worse and this causes even more anxiety and worry.
The more often we feel like this, the more overwhelmed and stuck we can begin to feel and we can struggle to find a way out. But it can be different.
Together, we will discover and test out new ways of thinking and doing, boost your existing coping and support you to make positive changes which will lead you to feel more in control, improving your resilience and well being for the future. CBT is particularly helpful for making changes in the following problems:
- depression and low mood
- anxiety
- panic
- worry and generalised anxiety disorder
- low self-esteem
- sleep problems
- health anxiety
- specific phobias e.g. heights, blood & injection, animals, flying
- obsessive-compulsive disorder
- hoarding
- body dysmorphic disorder
- social anxiety
- habit problems e.g. skin picking, hair pulling
- post-traumatic stress disorder
- work-related stress
- anger
- mental health problems in relation to long term conditions e.g. pain, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia
This list is not exhaustive, and you may not be sure what the main problem is, you may just know that something is not right and you need some help.
